Australia/New Zealand, advalorem wharfage in South Africa), if applicable.
Destination Formalities and Regulations
On arrival overseas, our Agents are fully conversant with the formalities and regulations involved
in undertaking the importation of household and personal effects and motor vehicles. The staff,
chosen for their expertise and local knowledge, will assist with documentation and carry out an
efficient and speedy delivery. Although all goods are liable to duty upon importation, many
countries give concessions, especially for immigrants who have owned and used their effects prior
to shipment.
A number of countries, in particular Australia, may insist upon quarantine documentation and
possibly inspection of such items suspected of carrying harmful insects and diseases (i.e. lawn
mowers, garden tools, vacuum waste bags, untreated rafia, wicker furniture, raw wood, outdoor
sports and equestrian equipment).
If the shipment contains firearms, sword sticks, daggers etc., Customs will most certainly want to
inspect these items and they should therefore be placed in cartons which should be clearly marked
on the inventory so they can be easily accessible to the Customs Officer.
A physical inspection may be necessary, especially if a packing list, inventory of Customs
Declaration has not been supplied. For your assistance, we would advise that items such as those
listed above, together with motor vehicles are more likely to require an inspection. You should
note that the shipper has an obligation to declare all goods.
You should be aware that Customs inspections can be costly, as these are carried out by Government
Departments. The costs levied for clearance and inspection do not include fumigation (if deemed
necessary) or steam cleaning of motor vehicles. If these services are found to be necessary by
the Authorities, they will be invoiced separately to the consignee.
